Cardenas and Chandler Sophistication, Originality and Complexity

Born in Lanzarote (Canary Islands) in 1947, Antonio Cardenas is a Spanish painter and sculptor who was self-taught but whose work is remarkably sophisticated. His artistic talents were evident from an early age and he began his formal art education as a teenager in Andujar (Jaén) under the tutelage of Antonio Orea. His artistic faculties were recognised in 1965 when he received a first prize in the Torremolinos Fast Painting Contest. In 1974 he was awarded a scholarship from the Castellblanch Art Foundation and studied plastic arts with Joan Rebull in Mallorca. In 1976 he moved to Granada and expanded his education to graphic arts at the Rodriguez Acosta Foundation, where he collaborated with some of the finest printmakers of the time. While in Granada he also worked for the press, as an illustrator for articles covering different events and creating portraits of important figures.

Since then, Cardenas has continued to deliver outstanding works that are highly regarded not only for their originality and artistry but also for their complexity, variety and sensitivity. He has held exhibitions in more than eight countries, including major cities in Spain, United States, Germany, Belgium, France, England, Bahrain and Morocco. His extensive artistic activity includes portraits, jewellery design sculpture, murals and graphic arts.An accomplished artist born in born in Brooklyn (New York) in 1949, Jean Marie Chandler began her studies in fine arts at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. In 1970 she spent a semester abroad in Madrid at the Institute of Hispanic Culture and The Prado Museum through an exchange program sponsored by New York University.

Her parents moved to London in 1971 and she followed shortly after graduation. Eventually, she returned to Spain, residing in southern Spain for the most part, where she continued to work on her paintings. Her artistic activities and developments include a painting announcing the Holy Week procession of the Brotherhood of the University of Málaga, illustrations for various books, publicity and special works commissioned by private clients. She also continues to create watercolours and collaborate with interior decorators and galleries throughout the world.
