Last issue we featured the winning entries in the amateur section of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards (www.worldphoto.org)… now the winners of the professional categories have been announced.
Thirty-two year-old Norwegian photographer Andrea Gjestvang was named the L’Iris d’Or/Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year, beating over 122,000 entries from 170 countries.
The judges voted unanimously for Gjestvang’s series of portraits of children and youths who survived the July 2011 massacre on the island of Utoeya, outside Oslo. Titled “One Day in History”, the series was described as “capturing the young survivors with immense sensitivity and honesty… an enduring testament to the resolve of these young people in the face of this unspeakable tragedy”.
Her work and that of the other category winners will be published in the 2013 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book.
