As we all know, San Pedro de Alcántara is enjoying a new awakening with recent developments such as the boulevard and the new cultural centre, Centro Cultural Trapiche de Guadaiza. With all eyes on San Pedro at the moment, owners of the chic chill-out bar NH Lounge (on top of the NH Hotel) took the opportunity to open another establishment in the area, and it has already become a hit with the locals. As we would expect from Alberto and Ana, Barbulla has been lovingly put together with their own personal touches. Though Barbulla is a casual establishment, the attention to detail is second-to-none. They cater for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks such as beers, wines, cocktails and liquors, making it an ideal place for any time of the day.
The menu is extensive and very reasonably priced. For breakfast, as well as lighter options such as muesli, toast and bagels, you can indulge yourself in an eggs Benedict for just €6.50, American pancakes or an English breakfast with all the trimmings for under seven euros. During the day, as well as interesting salads and sandwiches, they have creative tapas and “raciones” such as crispy squid hotdog with alioli, king prawn tempura with a side dish of truffle oil, and tasty croquettes. If you are a little hungrier, there are larger dishes including a tortilla with traditional Mexican slow-roasted pork with salsa verde, and Santa Rosalia ox burger with truffle oil, Idiazabal cheese, pickle, bacon, onion, lettuce and tomato. Treat yourself to some of their homemade desserts – their banoffee pie is to die for!
The decoration could be described as rustic chic. Barbulla has a very organic feel about it, with tables made from reclaimed wood, shelves built using with wooden crates and an exposed brick wall (where you will find Lego placed in the cracks). For those who like to be sitting out in the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, there are high bench tables and chairs at the front of Barbulla. Inside, there is a long bar where the main seating area is, with a large variety of drinks, and at the rear a show-cooking area where they are holding cookery courses and wine tasting events. You can find out about their events on their Facebook page.
