Christine and Michel have owned restaurants in the salubrious area of Knokke in Belgium and still currently run a huge and very successful beach club there called Zoutestrand. When they bought their home in Spain a few years ago, their dream was to open a beach club in Marbella, and when Macaao became available they jumped at the opportunity.
Chef Alex has worked in Michelin-star restaurants back in Belgium, but he has since made a name for himself working in prestigious restaurants on the Costa del Sol.
As Christine comments, “Michel and Alex went to school together and refer to each other as ‘brothers’ as they have always stayed in touch – they have a true bond!” It is probably this great relationship between the owners that makes the restaurant so successful, as there is a great spirit amongst the staff. Everyone who works there comes across as enthusiastic and well-informed, offering an attentive service without being overbearing.
The menu is decidedly French/Belgian, with a good range of wines and champagnes and ingredients not often found on beach club menus across the Coast, such as oysters, foie gras, grey shrimps and mussels. The prices are around what you would expect to pay for the quality of the ingredients, and the portions are generous. The dining area is extremely comfortable, with a fantastic view out to sea offering a tranquil and elegant place to enjoy the beach – which is also suitable for children.
Macaao Beach Club Marbella is open seven days a week for lunch and every night for dinner except for Sundays and Mondays – with easy parking – and also open every day for lunch throughout winter (not nights).
