Tell us something about your professional background and why you chose to come to Spain…
I fell in love with Spain after a short trip I did in the eighties and then I decided to come back sooner or later to establish my business and my life in this country. After 15 years living here, I haven’t had any regrets at any time, feeling very proud of my decision and happier every day.
I find Spain amazing with the different cultures, beautiful weather, good wines and gastronomy and, of course, I find a lot of inspiration in people from Spain. After living in many different parts of Spain, including Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, in the end I discovered that Marbella is one of the best places in the whole world to live.
I have been involved in the art business for the last 20 years and I don’t think I could do another thing in my life. Even when times are tough – and selling art can be just as hard if not harder than making art – I keep on working hard and pressing ahead with my business of offering original art works to our clients, because original pieces have a certain energy about them that reproductions and mass-produced decorative items don’t have. You know just by looking at it that another human being made it, and not a machine.
What are the basic principles behind your work ethic?
I only believe in hard work, and passion in what you do, and luckily I can practise both in my everyday activity.
How would you summarise the market at present and how you fit into this market?
The facts are that selling art work isn’t easy, even in a healthy economy, and at times like this it can seem downright impossible, but confronting adversity is a fact of life, especially for artists, so we worked out interim agreements with our artists to make our art more affordable.
We realise that money isn’t flowing quite as freely as it was in past years, but we also know that people still want to buy art, so we are responding to that. Our goal is to be able to offer clients original and exclusive art pieces at affordable prices for their own personal spaces, ambience and atmospheres, where good taste prevails.
Art personalises and humanises the places where we live and work. Art revives lifeless interiors, homes as well as businesses, and transforms them into unique, beautiful and engaging environments.
What do you most enjoy about your work and what is your vision for the company?
I am a lucky person being able to deal and share my work with great artists, most of them from Spain; it is a pleasure for me to have long conversations and spend hours with them, exchanging points of view and learning a lot from them.
I also feel very proud of a great team of professionals working every day in the workshop, helping at the different fairs we do every year, such as Maison & Objet in Paris, Salone del Mobile in Milan, Ambience Frankfurt and Index Dubai, visiting clients in different parts of Spain, currently being the top company supplying original art works for interior designers, architects, designers and top-level decoration shops in this country and a great part of Europe,
My vision for this company is very positive. Over the last few years of difficulties in the global economy, we kept on growing and working hard, so all I can think of is to keep doing the same and never feel that tough times can stop us doing the right thing.
How do you see the future in art?
Once you understand and accept the fact that art prices fluctuate according to supply, demand, and economic conditions, that they always have and they always will, your artistic life becomes easier. That is the vision of an art appraiser who’s studied the market for decades and watched prices ebb and flow. You can’t expect your price structure to stay the same or continue to rise when everybody around you has less discretionary capital to spend; and when, what little they have, they will only spend if it’s for a really good reason. So I am ready to lower prices, significantly if necessary, in order to keep my art career alive, and keep on being able to generate income during lean economic times.
Thanks in large part to the internet and art fairs – we are present in many of them – art markets have steadily evolved from local and regional to national and international. So considering the relative health and growth of various economies around the world, as compared with ours, there’s no better time than the present to explore international opportunities for showing and selling art.
Artists possess unique talents and abilities to express emotions, arouse feelings, explore sensitive issues and make powerful statements with their art. Rather than viewing tough times as obstacles to career success, consider them opportunities to tap into your creative strengths and reserves, and to expand your sphere of influence. Impact someone else’s life with your art in a meaningful way, and you just might make yourself a sale.
What do you think is key to running a successful company in Spain?
In my beginnings, starting a business in Spain was like my own personal challenge, and I always took good care to respect the culture, values and traditions. Also, I always tried to be surrounded by well-trained staff, which I think is essential.
I am happy to say that a big part of our success is our flexibility and ability to adapt to our clients with their projects, whether they are building a private villa, a complete hotel, an office, a restaurant, etc. Because we specialise in offering unique and exclusive art pieces for decoration projects.
