From bespoke furniture and award-winning villas to international architecture, interiors and construction projects, UDesign has become one of the Costa del Sol’s leading design studios. At the centre of the company is a three-floor showroom designed to turn ideas into reality. We spoke to founder Jason Harris about Marbella’s creative influence, the evolution of UDesign and why physical spaces still matter in a digital world. Why did you choose the Costa del Sol as a base for your company? I moved here from Wales in 1992 and have now lived here longer than I lived in Wales. It’s home. The coast is full of talented architects and designers, and Marbella has become a real design destination. Being surrounded by creativity and clients who value good design makes it an inspiring place to work.
How did UDesign evolve? We started as an interior design company in 2008, but our projects quickly became larger and more substantial. At one point, a client wanted furniture in sizes and finishes that simply didn’t exist, so we designed the pieces and had them made locally. From there, we began creating our
own bespoke furniture and gradually expanded into a combination of interiors, furniture design and production, architecture and lighting. We also work with a variety of carefully-selected brands that we trust.
What inspired the move into full architectural villa design? As we took on larger projects, we realised many beautiful homes weren’t designed around how people actually live. Spaces looked impressive but didn’t always function well in terms of furniture layout and flow. As interior designers, we often wanted to improve a space but were constrained by the internal shapes and sizes. It became clear that everyone would benefit from working together from the outset. Today, our architects and interior designers collaborate from day one. Architecture, materials, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting and furniture are considered as part of a single vision, creating more cohesive and harmonious homes. While architecture and interior design are inseparable in our approach, each discipline brings its own expertise to the process.
What role does the showroom play? We live in a world filled with beautiful renders, AI-generated images and Pinterest inspiration. The challenge isn’t creating the design, it’s
delivering it on budget, on time, and to the highest quality. Our showroom exists so clients can experience everything in person. The materials, ceramics, kitchens, bathrooms and furniture shown in our renders are all real products or pieces we manufacture ourselves. The goal is to show clients exactly what they’re going to receive, not an unrealistic concept.
Why is a physical showroom still important today? People need to experience design physically. Online images can’t show texture, scale or how materials work together. If a client sees a kitchen in a render, we can show them the actual doors, worktops, lighting and finishes in the showroom. When clients can touch and experience in person themselves, it gives them confidence that the final result will match the vision.
What details can transform how a home feels? Lighting is one of the most important. A home changes completely after sunset, so we think carefully about how spaces feel both day and night. Our lighting specialists work alongside the architects and designers from the very start, ensuring lighting becomes part of the design rather than an afterthought.
What can visitors experience there that they can’t online? They experience the reality behind the design. They can meet the architects, designers and project managers behind each project, see the craftsmanship up close and ask questions directly. That human connection is something digital platforms can’t replace.
What does luxury mean to you today? Luxury isn’t about having lots of expensive furniture and materials. It’s about creating spaces that feel balanced, connected and comfortable. Every element matters – proportions, lighting, materials, furniture placement and the flow between rooms. Nothing should feel accidental.
What achievement are you most proud of? Designing Vista Lago in Real de La Quinta. The project won Best Multi Residential Development in Spain, and went on to win Best Multi Residential Development in Europe, which was an incredible moment for us as a company. Good design should make a home not only look good but feel good, and Vista Lago is a great example of that. When I drive up the Ronda road and see it on the mountainside, it still feels quite surreal knowing that we have made a very positive contribution to the landscape.

Hablamos con su fundador, Jason Harris, sobre la influencia creativa de Marbella, la evolución de UDesign y por qué los espacios físicos siguen siendo importantes en un mundo digital.
¿Por qué eligió la Costa del Sol como sede de su empresa? Me mudé aquí desde Gales en 1992 y ahora llevo viviendo aquí más tiempo que allí. Es mi hogar. La costa está llena de arquitectos y diseñadores con talento, y Marbella se ha convertido en un referente del diseño. Estar rodeado de creatividad y clientes que valoran el buen diseño la convierte en un lugar inspirador para trabajar.
¿Cómo evolucionó UDesign? Empezamos como una empresa de interiorismo en 2008, pero nuestros proyectos crecieron rápidamente. Un cliente quería muebles con tamaños y acabados que no existían, así que diseñamos las piezas y las fabricamos localmente. A partir de ahí comenzamos a crear nuestro propio mobiliario a medida y ampliamos nuestra actividad hacia el diseño de interiores, mobiliario, arquitectura e iluminación. También trabajamos con una cuidada selección de marcas en las que confiamos.
¿Qué inspiró el paso al diseño integral de villas? A medida que asumíamos proyectos de mayor envergadura, nos dimos cuenta de que muchas viviendas impresionantes no estaban diseñadas en torno a cómo vive realmente la gente. Los espacios resultaban atractivos visualmente, pero no siempre funcionaban bien en términos de distribución y fluidez. Como interioristas, a menudo queríamos mejorar los espacios, pero la configuración del espacio nos limitaba. Hoy, arquitectos e interioristas colaboran desde el primer día. Arquitectura, materiales, cocinas, baños, iluminación y mobiliario se conciben como parte de una única visión, creando viviendas más coherentes. Aunque para nosotros la arquitectura y el diseño de interiores son inseparables, cada disciplina aporta su propia experiencia.
¿Qué papel desempeña el showroom? Vivimos rodeados de renders espectaculares, imágenes generadas por IA e inspiración de Pinterest. El reto no es crear el diseño, sino ejecutarlo dentro del presupuesto, en plazo y con la máxima calidad. Nuestro showroom permite a los clientes experimentar todo en persona. ¿Por qué sigue siendo importante un showroom físico hoy en día? Porque el diseño necesita experimentarse físicamente. Las imágenes online no transmiten la textura, la escala ni cómo interactúan los materiales. Si un cliente ve una cocina en un render, podemos mostrarle las puertas, encimeras, acabados e iluminación reales. Verlo y tocarlo aporta la confianza de que el resultado final será fiel a la visión inicial.
¿Qué detalles pueden transformar la sensación que transmite una vivienda? La iluminación es uno de los más importantes. Una casa cambia completamente después de la puesta de sol, por lo que pensamos cuidadosamente cómo se perciben los espacios tanto de día como de noche. Nuestros especialistas trabajan junto a arquitectos y diseñadores desde el inicio para que la iluminación forme parte del diseño.
¿Qué pueden experimentar los visitantes que no puedan experimentar online? La realidad que hay detrás del diseño. Pueden conocer a los arquitectos, diseñadores y gestores de proyecto, apreciar la calidad de la ejecución de cerca y plantear sus preguntas directamente. Esa conexión humana sigue siendo insustituible.
¿Qué significa el lujo para usted hoy? El lujo no consiste en acumular materiales o muebles caros. Consiste en crear espacios equilibrados y confortables. Todo importa: las proporciones, la iluminación, los materiales, la ubicación del mobiliario y la relación entre las distintas estancias. Nada debe parecer casual.
¿De qué logro se siente más orgulloso? Del diseño de Vista Lago, en Real de La Quinta. El proyecto ganó el premio a Mejor Desarrollo Residencial Multifamiliar de España y posteriormente el de Europa, un momento extraordinario para nosotros. Un buen diseño no solo debe hacer que una vivienda se vea bien, sino que también se sienta bien, y Vista Lago es un gran ejemplo de ello. Cuando conduzco por la carretera de Ronda y lo veo integrado en la ladera de la montaña, todavía me parece surrealista saber que hemos contribuido de forma tan positiva al paisaje.
