Six Senses could hardly have chosen a more stunning setting when establishing their first resort in Europe. Located in the Douro Valley UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Portugal, at the foot of a valley, the magnificent hotel complex offers picturesque views of the Douro River and surrounding vineyards. The property tastefully combines the romance of 19th century architecture with ultra-slick contemporary interiors. With its proximity to one of the oldest wine-making regions in the world, it is not surprising that Six Senses Douro Valley offers excellent wine and food options. The Wine Library located at the heart of the resort features a menu of tapas, cheese and local meats paired with the finest Douro wine, which can be savoured by the glass. Expert wine directors and sommeliers have selected a range of premium, organic and biodynamic wines that marry superbly with the resort restaurant’s wholesome flavours. Guests can also experience the heart of traditional Douro cooking at the chef’s table, where dishes are prepared with a personal touch and paired with wines from the surrounding library.

The expansive Six Senses Spa is another outstanding resort highlight, offering treatments that are described as “a union of nature and Portuguese tradition incorporating elements of water, stone and wood”. Ten spacious treatment rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the landscape.

The spa also comprises a heated indoor pool with water jets, an outdoor pool and refreshment bar, and a gym with the latest exercise equipment and professional guidance. There are Six Senses specialty treatments and multi-day programmes, together with locally-inspired therapies – some of which are grape and citrus fruit based. Guests can also take advantage of an interactive wellness workshop, The Alchemy Bar, and work with a wide variety of local herbs, fruits and spice to create artisanal and entirely organic laundry products, kitchen pharmacy potions, body scrubs, face and hair masks, lip balms and home fragrances. For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, the Quinta Vineyard Suite extends over 95 square metres on the top floor of an exclusive wing of the hotel, with a spacious bedroom, bathroom and living areas. Its expansive wooden deck terrace is equipped with a hot tub, day bed and dining area, all offering spectacular views over the vineyards.

Guests who book the suite are also able to curate and stock their own mini bar ahead of arrival, including local delicacies. In addition, the suite comes with a temperature-controlled state-of-the-art wine fridge replete with a tailored selection of fine Douro wines, especially regulated to keep them at their optimal temperature. Rates at Six Senses Douro Valley start from €325 based on two sharing a Quinta Superior room on a room-only basis. Daily breakfast is available from €35 per person per day. Rates for the Quinta Vineyard Suite start from €1,250 per night on a roomonly basis.
