Jumeirah Port Sóller
It would be hard to find a more dramatic setting for a luxury holiday in southern Europe. Perched on a cliff overlooking the serene fishing village of Port Sóller, on Mallorca’s picturesque north-west coast, Jumeirah Port Sóller Hotel & Spa is surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range – a UNESCO Heritage site.
Re-opening in March after winter, the hotel’s 120 sea or mountain-facing rooms extend across 11 low-rise buildings covering 18,000 square metres, all connected by scented garden walks and internal passageways, and surrounded by natural rock and native vegetation. For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, the superior room offers a harmonious sense of spaciousness, with its comfortable interior, expansive outdoor area, eye-catching mountain views and luxury details including Bvlgari bathroom amenities.
The architecture has been designed to take into account the natural surroundings, with the result that the integrated building appears to blend into the mountain, landscape and forests. All flat roofs throughout the property are planted with vegetation and tall grasses in order to provide subtle movement on windy days.
Jumeirah Port Sóller’s communal amenities include al fresco restaurants serving Spanish cuisine, bars and lounges with magnificent views across the Mediterranean, swimming pools (two heated all year round and including an infinity pool), and the sumptuous Talise spa with 10 spacious treatment rooms.
The hotel’s art collection has specifically been created and curated “to reflect Mediterranean soul, the values inherent in the Sóller valley, and the very essence of Jumeirah’s ‘Stay Different’ philosophy”. Entitled “The Art of Experience”, it comprises 400 artworks produced by a dozen local artists, including paintings, watercolours, collages, photographs, sculpted stones, ceramics, glasswork and even ropes.
The wooded area around beyond the hotel is ideal for outdoor activities, including trekking, hiking, mountain biking and climbing. Private yachts are available to hire for day excursions, to visit beaches and hidden coves, and for fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving, and the islands of Menorca and Ibiza are within a short sailing distance.
The hotel is 35 kilometres from Palma International Airport (just over 30 minutes by car), with Palma city also able to be reached by a scenic one-hour long train ride direct from Sóller train station. The Port de Sóller village is a short walk away, and a frequent shuttle bus service to the village and beaches is available from the hotel. Located three kilometres inland, the town of Sóller is best visited by taking the century-old, wood-panelled tram that meanders from the coast through verdant countryside and olive and orange groves, stopping at various key places en route during its 30-minute journey.
